Good crossbow for deer hunting?

Friday, February 26th, 2010
ruckus1837 asked:

I’m looking for an affordable crossbow that has enough power to take down a large deer. I’ve never bow hunted before, so any help deciding is appreciated. I usually rifle hunt, but my school schedule doesn’t work out with rifle hunting season this year.
The distance would likely be less than 20 yards. My hunting plot is a old service road that’s grown up and VERY active as far as deer go.
I’ll be hunting in Allen County KY. I already checked the regs and it seems to be okay.
What about the Parker Buck-Buster 150 Crossbow Outfitter? It seems to be a good choice, and within my price range.

graham b asked:

Ok I have been bow hunting for years. Right now im trying for distance like 70 80 yards im doing this for my self not for hunting my goal is to make 100 yards hand hit a 5×6 card its a long shot but its some thing that I want to do any help. I can hit the 5×6 card at 55 yards but after that the arrow is kinda shaky. The arrows im using are gold tips with 100grain fild points the arrow weight is around 360 grain. Oh and im using my fred bear blacktaile hunter at 70 lbs and 28inch draw
I forgot im pushing 283 feet per second. With up stage round cams fast flite string and cable leed custom steel 10 oz front stablelizer and my custom string glide is 5.6 oz so the bows is about 6 lbs. Im at 6 foot 1 inch 245 lbs. It fits me.
Ya im makeing it to the target that’s a 6×4 3/4 inch plywood with a hips target with a 5×6 card on it I hit the hips boad about 6 inchs around the card if I can fix the tuning on it i might be able to get it. The arrow is almost going in wide spins of about 2 inch around the 40 yard mark and then fixing its self. Oh and I have two arrows with 2inch blazers and two with the true feather that are what 4 inches long.

I have a tree fort that wraps around the whole tree that I use for hunting. Right now it is only about 8 feet high, and it doesn’t seem like it is high enough. I have to stand up to get a shot off and every time i do the deer see me and spook. How high should it be to bow hunt?

Advice on Hunting dogs (it’s a really long question)?

Friday, February 19th, 2010
Steven asked:

Hi, I’m a keen archer and have been for many years now, being 17 and having a dad more into fishing than hunting i haven’t been able to go out yet but have a few mates who are interested and will do so ASAP. However, recently when talking to my grandad, we stuck up conversation about it and he was telling me of when he used to go out with his dogs and some mates. This has got me excited about the possibility of taking my dog out wild pig hunting with me.. I got her for my 17th birthday (last december) and she is a 9 month old German Shepherd X Alaskan Malamute. She pretty much looks like a black wolf and isnt what i’d call a small dog even at 9 months.

Left handed shooter with a right handed bow?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010
Josh M asked:

Just started out hunting and I have a right handed bow that my brother-in-law gave me that was his old one. He tried showing me how to shoot it with both eyes open, but it wasn’t happening. I can close my right eye with no problem but I can’t close my left, I guess I’m screwed up like that. I bought an eye patch to cover my left eye; How difficult is this actually going to be? I’m going bow hunting for the first time on Sept. 19th and I have been practicing everyday for about 30-45 mins just shooting in my backyard, but I may get a small group around every other set. So I guess my question is do I just suck it up and use the bow for the rest of the season and buy a left handed bow next year year or continue to try to try and use the patch until I perfect it.
