archey bow help. how to acheve distance?

graham b asked:

Ok I have been bow hunting for years. Right now im trying for distance like 70 80 yards im doing this for my self not for hunting my goal is to make 100 yards hand hit a 5×6 card its a long shot but its some thing that I want to do any help. I can hit the 5×6 card at 55 yards but after that the arrow is kinda shaky. The arrows im using are gold tips with 100grain fild points the arrow weight is around 360 grain. Oh and im using my fred bear blacktaile hunter at 70 lbs and 28inch draw
I forgot im pushing 283 feet per second. With up stage round cams fast flite string and cable leed custom steel 10 oz front stablelizer and my custom string glide is 5.6 oz so the bows is about 6 lbs. Im at 6 foot 1 inch 245 lbs. It fits me.
Ya im makeing it to the target that’s a 6×4 3/4 inch plywood with a hips target with a 5×6 card on it I hit the hips boad about 6 inchs around the card if I can fix the tuning on it i might be able to get it. The arrow is almost going in wide spins of about 2 inch around the 40 yard mark and then fixing its self. Oh and I have two arrows with 2inch blazers and two with the true feather that are what 4 inches long.

Sounds like tuning issue. Wiggly arrows is not the end of the world though. Park Sung Hyun, the top ranked female archer in the world, and arguably the best archer in the world both male and female, shot arrows that fishtails like mad during one tournament. But as long as they’re shot exactly the same way each and everytime, they will always land on the same spot. Of course, shooting it exactly the same way is the hard part. Ms. Park is as close as you can get to a human Hooter Shooter.

Now, these shakes you see on the arrow, are they major shakes slow and wide side to side or up and down shakes, or are they quick and narrow side to side shakes? If they’re slow and wide, then it’s a spine issue, quick and narrow usually means clearance issue.

Go to this site. Read through the tuning methods, specially the Easton Archery method. Go through tuning your bow and that will help get rid of any shaking.

What kind of fletching are you using? And just to be clear, you are reaching the target at 100yards correct? Just trying to trim down the group size?

    targetbutt is right.

Also, if you are drawing further than normal in an attempt to get more “power”, you are changing your draw length — and that will affect arrow spine and arrow flight.

To get more distance, just lean back at the waist. Do not just raise your arm, as that will also change draw length.
