    in canada anyways…

you need a FAC (or PAL) to buy guns or ammo which involves a course to make sure you arnt going to kill yourself or others.

you need to take a “hunters ed course” which is more about gun safety and hunters ethics and anamial IDing. this will let you qualify for a hunting licence. which you need to buy. then your hunting tags.

you need to regester your firearms that you bought.

think post hunt. Where will you register it, where will you get the meat processed.? How will you get it to where your taking it? Every state has a mini-rule book, find that and READ it. It tells you a lot that you need to know. They have them at every wal-mart. After your meat is procesed where will you store the meat?

Don’t forget a charged cell phone and a whistle in case you get lost in the woods. Wear clothes in layers. It will be cold early, but once the sun comes up you might get hot.

Along with the license you’ll need deer tags. Am sure that other rsponders will give additional needs so won’t go inta’ that but, one important note especially if your just startin’ out ie., learn how ta’, “Field Dress” aka clean em’. Here are some links with variations of the process;)… < ' ( (( > <

Ok im talking about guns so watch out. Depanding on the state, you can either hunt with a shotgun or a rifle. In plains states you usually cant hunt with a rifle because of their range, only shotguns with slugs. I dont know much about rifles because of my state.(Ohio) Try a rifle in the .30 caliber family, anything else except maybe for the black powder 45-70 would be too powerful. There are a variety of shotguns out there, so here are some reccomendations: If you are young or of a light build, i would reccomend a 20 gauge shotgun. It has lighter recoil than a twelve, but it still kicks like a mule when you throw a slug out of it. If it hurts too much, get a recoil pad. If you are a normal person, do a 12 gauge. The ammo is common and a good pump shotgun is still several hundered dollars less than a new rifle. Good Luck.

You’ll need warm clothes, including boots and gloves. You have to sit still while stand hunting, and that’s impossible when you’re freezing. Get some handwarmers – stick them in your pockets. I tape one to the top of each foot, too. Get a daypack to carry other things: binoculars, lunch, flashlight, an extra sweater, a few feet of rope (it helps with dragging a deer out of the woods), some rubber gloves – stuff like that. I’d suggest you get copies ot Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, and other magazines and read everything you can on the subject. Good luck!
