Public Land Elk Hunting – Colorado?

Danny D asked:

I would like to take a trip out to Colorado and do some elk hunting.

I already have a guided black bear bow hunt this year in Maine so i cant afford to spend another 4K on a elk guided hunt.

I hear that a lot of people go out there and have succesfull public land elk hunts.

I am trying to see if anyone has or knows someone who has done this before.

And any tips would be appreciated.

PS – I am going with my bow.
Thanks Doc – You spelled it right too lol…that seserves a thumbs up just for that…
Thanks White – Actually i have the rules and regs here in front of me and it says that a guarenteed archery permit for wither sex elk is like 575$…i know i have to buy a hunting license and im sure a stamp of some sorts…but thats better than paying a guide 3000 and having to buy all that stuff….here in Illinois, its 355 bucks for a non resident to bow hunt here….thats ridiculous…

I have a friend in Colorado Springs who does most of his hunting, especially elk, in the Uncomphagre (sp?) National Forest.

I live in Colorado Springs and I have yet to go elk hunting because we got here too late last year, but I know that there are elk EVERYWHERE. I saw a herd of about 30 of them just wandering around last week. The only thing I don’t like about Colorado is the whole lottery system thing….you may not even get to shoot one, and if you do it will cost an arm and a leg to get tags if you are not a resident.

I miss Texas hunting…even though the deer are smaller.

Here is a good website for you ~

Just to let you know, Idaho has over the counter out of state tags, sometimes even till season opens. That means you can buy the license and tag without a lottery system, and there are a lot of public lands in Idaho too. You can choose from Southeast Idaho near Yellowstone or high desert around Blackfoot or down by Soda Springs and Bear Lake. There are great herds near Grangeville and Hell’s Canyon, and then the Clearwater drainage and North Idaho from St.Maries all the way to Canada.
I grew up in North Idaho with the elk bugling in the mornings.
